His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada
On September 17, 1965, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami arrived at the port of New York City—not as an ordinary traveler, but as a visionary on a spiritual mission. With just a few possessions and deep faith in Lord Krishna, he set out to share the timeless teachings of the ancient Vedic tradition with the Western world.
Born on September 1, 1896, in Kolkata, Abhay Charan Das grew up in a devout Hindu household during the era of British colonial rule. In his youth, he actively supported India’s freedom movement, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. However, a pivotal encounter in 1922 with the revered spiritual leader Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati profoundly shaped his life’s purpose.
Driven by his guru’s instruction, Srila Prabhupada later established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in 1966. By the time of his passing in 1977, ISKCON had flourished into a global movement with over 100 temples, ashrams, and cultural centers worldwide—bringing the message of Krishna consciousness to people across continents.
